Copper Cocktail Shakers
For those of you who are frequent
visitors to the bar, you must know all about the cocktail
shakers. It is one of the most common instruments behind the
bar. It is used to mix the drink with ice before serving.
It not only helps in chilling the drink quickly
but, is also helpful in mixing the ingredients properly. It
is this ability of the cocktail shakers that makes them available
at every bar.
The history of cocktail shakers dates back to 1872,
when the first patent was filed. At that time, the design
was far more mechanical in nature than what we see these days.
Prior to that the bartenders used something like
a mixing glass or pitcher of some sort to mix their drinks.
The invention of cocktail shakers came as a boon for them
and thus started the era of mixing & chilling the drinks
at the same time.
The story of the invention of cocktail shakers tells us that
at some point, one bartender was using two slightly different
sized metal mixing containers and found accidentally that
he could fit one inverted container over the other.
Thus one could shake the drink effectively without spilling
a drop. The definition of cocktail shaker tells us that it is a
device consisting of a container and a lid, with a strainer, used
for mixing beverages by shaking. There are many types of cocktail
shakers available in the market today, but commonly they are classified
into two varieties.
One of them is known as boston shaker. It is typically a two-piece device with a metal bottom & glass or plastic mixing bowl. Other type is known as cobbler shaker, which is a three-piece shaker. It has tapers at the top and ends with a built in strainer & includes a cap.
You definitely remember those eternal lines form James Bond “martini shaken not stirred”. & Hence started the love affair with the cocktail shaker!
